Ethics
Branch of philosophy concerned with the intent, means, and consequences of moral behavior. It is also Study of moral judgments and right and wrong conduct. it also refers to a person’s fundamental orientation toward life.
Theories on Ethics
- Heifetz’s theory: Leadership involves the use of authority to help followers uphold values in the workplace
- Burns’s theory: Transformational leadership emphasizes the moral development of followers and maintenance of high standards of ethical conduct
- Greenleaf’s approach: Leadership has strong ethical overtones, with the premise that true leadership is service to others
Ethics is a difficult subject forcing people to think about moral issues with elusive answers.Current issues that people face:

Secular Ethics
- Basis in the scientific understanding of the world
- Reality, truth, and goodness do not depend on the existence of a god
Religious Ethics
- Based on a theistic understanding of the world
- Reality, truth, and goodness are defined by God
There are several influences that form one’s character.Following are the factors that influence are-
- Associations: Family, friends, and role models shape our lives
- Books: Media can poison or enlighten us
- Self-concept: Primary motivation is preservation of the symbolic self
There are several morality stages that are explained in this chapter and hence each stage has its own importance. Morality and ethics are one and the same things and hence are important at both the workplace and in our personal lives as well.
